Children's Formation (Ages 3-12)

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd

What is it?

A Montessori-based, Christian spiritual formation program for children aged 3-12.  The adults (catechists) lift up Scripture and Liturgy, meditating with the child on God's deep love for each one present.  Then the child is given the time and environment to respond to God's word with art work or further engagement with the lovingly-made materials, most of which come out of the parish community.

The atrium is a place in which the only Teacher is the Holy Spirit: both children and adults place themselves in a listening stance before his Word and seek to penetrate the mystery of the liturgical celebration.

What do they learn?

The question might well be: Whom do they get to know? Principally, over the course of their time in the Atrium from age 3 to 12, the child grows to know deeply the love of theGood Shepherd, Jesus Christ; and how the Bible and our worship of God reveal this great love for them and all His creation.  With work that extends directly from scripture (Parables, Prophecies, geography of Biblical events, narratives; and in Level III, the miracles, Old Testament figures, the History of the Jewish People) and from our liturgy, the child realizes that God has always had a plan to bring all of humankind into the fullness of His Kingdom. The child becomes gradually aware that they, too, have a role in this great Plan.

Who came up with it?
Sofia Cavaletti, a Hebrew and Scripture scholar, and Gianna Gobbi, an educator and collaborator with Maria Montessori, initiated this method of Catechesis in the 1950’s. Often called a living work, the Catechesis as it is known, is the product of the careful observation of children for over 60 years.  Click below for more info:

Children's Chapel

Children's Chapel happens most Sundays, during the 10:30am Eucharist.  It is a time to reflect on God's word, in song and prayer.  After the Gospel reading, children up to 10 years old, are invited to join adult leaders in the narthex. Parents are welcome to attend.  They return at the Peace to rejoin their families.
